National Championship Myth

Published by mike_pallas at 12:01 am under BCS Edit This

It is time to dispel the myth that National Championship will be decided tonight in the game between Oklahoma and Florida. Yes, I said myth.

The winner will receive a trophy that says National Champion on it. They will also raise the crystal trophy in triumph. There are two questions I have for the winner. Question #1: How can you claim to be the best in the country when you have a loss and there is a team sitting in Provo, UT, with an undefeated season., and Question #2: How can you claim to be the champion when 45 percent of your competition is eliminated from championship contention before the beginning of the season?

The answer to both of those questions is you can’t. The Associated Press did the right thing in December of 2004 when the asked the BCS to stop using its poll as a part of the formula to determine the National Championship. Now the voters in the AP Poll must do the right thing and crown the Utah Utes the National Champion of college football.

Here are some reasons for the Utes being the National Champions. First, and foremost, they went undefeated. Second, they beat all three teams they played that finished in the top-25 in the BCS Standings. Third they beat Alabama, the team that was number one for five consecutive weeks.

Everyone is going to point out that their strength of schedule is weak. They played in the 4th toughest conference in the country.

It is about time we put this sham to bed. 2008 Utah Utes College Football National Champions
